License Information
7-Zip is free software with open source. Most of the code is under the GNU LGPL license. Some parts of the code are under the BSD 3-clause License. Also there is unRAR license restriction for some parts of the code.
You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip.
GNU LGPL License
Most of the 7-Zip code is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). This means you can:
- Use 7-Zip for any purpose, including commercial use
- Modify the source code
- Distribute the software
- Link 7-Zip code with proprietary applications
BSD 3-Clause License
Some parts of the code are under the BSD 3-clause License, which is one of the most permissive open source licenses. This allows:
- Free commercial and non-commercial use
- Modification and distribution
- Inclusion in proprietary software
- No requirement to share modifications
Important Notes
- You must include the license text when distributing 7-Zip
- If you modify LGPL-licensed code, you must release your modifications under LGPL
- The unRAR code has specific license restrictions (read-only extraction)
- Always check the source code headers for specific license information
